By mid-August when the discount stores are clearing their racks of remaining summer merchandise, it's a great time to stock up on deeply-discounted flip-flops. While those of us living in four-season climates will soon be tucking away our summer footwear for the season, there are untold numbers of people in poorer, warm-climate countries who own no shoes whatsoever. Flip-flops are fairly sturdy, inexpensive and water-proof, and protect children and adults from contracting bacteria and parasites through sores or wounds in their feet. Of course, you can purchase and donate flip-flops any time of the year, but by buying them at the end of the season, your money will stretch to help even more. Many organizations providing relief to countries like Haiti, Guatemala and Uganda will be happy to receive your donations. Matthew 25 Ministries is one such organization in the Cincinnati area.
