When shoveling a wet, heavy snow (like the kind we had overnight in our part of the world), there is a tendency for snow and ice to build up on the surface of the shovel, making it heavier to use for the job. The solution? Before using, spray the dry shovel with a coating of WD-40, cooking oil spray, or rub it with a coating of vegetable shortening (like Crisco). Really, any grease or oil will work, and by reducing friction, will enable you to use less elbow grease to get the job done. (Sorry . . . I couldn't resist.) If the snow begins to stick after a period of use, simply dry it well and reapply your lubricant of choice.
Finally, a use for vegetable shortening where I don't have to worry about Trans-fats!
